Adult Intermediate Tap

IN-STUDIO. Looking for a fun way to engage your body-mind connection? This intermediate level tap class challenges balance, coordination and memory while stimulating playfulness, creativity and fun. The class will be adapted to the level and interests of the participants. Instructor: Laura Downey

Move & Groove Line Dance

Move & Groove (Beginner)

In this class we will learn absolute beginner to high beginner dances and is perfect for new dancers or for those who haven’t grapevined in a while. Get your feet moving and your body grooving as you flow to the rhythms of Soul, Pop and Latin beats, and just a 'lil bit of country. Line dancing is a fun way to exercise your brain, work on balance, improve your stamina and memory all with low impact to your joints. It’s also a great way to socialize, have fun, and make new friends. Each week we add to the previous week’s list of dances, emphasize proper step technique and how to combine them, in order to build your repertoire of line dancing skills! If you can count to 8 you can line dance!!

Move & Groove Some More (Continuing)

This class is for those who have already taken Move&Groove or have some line dance experience or just like dancing. We will continue adding on to our repertoire of high beginner to improver line dances. But the emphasis stays on having fun! 

So get your feet moving and your body grooving as you flow to the rhythms of Soul, Pop and Latin beats, and just a 'lil bit of country. Each week we add to the previous week’s list of dances, emphasize proper step technique and how to combine them, in order to build your line dancing skills!

West African Dance Class

IN-STUDIO. African dance is great exercise in disguise. In this African dance class, we will focus on dances and rhythms from Guinea, West Africa. The music is played by an ensemble of drummers. You will get a fantastic workout while having fun. West African melodies are richly polyrhythmic and dynamic. The music and dance are intertwined. Your instructor breaks down the dance steps in a simple format for you to enjoy. Class is geared towards beginner/intermediate levels, but all levels welcome. Instructor: Amy Osterman

Yoga for Every Body

ONLINE. Yoga empowers, renews, and connects the body, mind and spirit. In a safe nurturing atmosphere, all participants will be encouraged to embrace their own experience as they improve their strength, awareness, and alignment. The class will include asana practice, some discussion, and deep resting. All ages, backgrounds, and experience levels are welcome. Instructor: Carol Stone

Tao of Tai-Chi Chuan

IN-STUDIO. The Chinese arts of Qi-Qong and Chan Ssu Chien incorporate Taoist philosophy to render simple, physically safe stretching techniques into mindful meditation. Following the teachings and work of Master Jou, Tsung Hwa martial arts practitioner Michael Drennan shows how posture, breath and basic movements can both capture and release pain and discomfort. Together we reexamine these basic elements of daily life following the foundations and philosophy of Tai Chi for inner peace and daily focus. Instructor: Michael Drennan

Feldenkrais®

ONLINE. Using gentle controlled movements, Feldenkrais® allows individuals to become aware of their unique patterns of movement, which can help them develop more efficient actions. This class is ideal for individuals looking to reduce stress and balance the overall tone of their nervous system. Additionally, Feldenkrais has proved to reduce workplace injuries that occur from repetitive motion, such as tendonitis and carpel tunnel syndrome. Instructor: Dan DeLorenzo

Gentle Yoga for Seniors

ONLINE. Senior yoga is for individuals who are extremely active and need to maintain their strength and flexibility, and for those with limited mobility who are in need of enhancing their strength and flexibility to improve their movement capabilities. With attention to proper alignment and injury prevention, Carol’s classes provide nurturing and clear instruction. Instructor: Carol Stone

Adult Beginner Tap

IN-STUDIO. Looking for a way to work up a little sweat while having fun - and moving at a slower pace while breaking down the steps? Try introduction to tap! Basic tap steps will be taught to upbeat music while developing coordination, posture, balance, and articulation of the feet. Tap dancing can also help with memory and overall cognitive health! No experience is necessary, and the class will be adapted to the level and interests of the participants. Instructor: Laura Downey

Rise & Shine Yoga

IN-STUDIO. Start your day off with intention and movement. This Hatha flow inspired class incorporates poses that encourage mobility, increase strength, and challenge balance. All experience levels are welcome.  Instructor: Shauna Babcock

Walking Club 

OUTDOORS. Based on American Heart Association guidelines, walking club will provide a structured weekly times and routes for all walkers to engage in a heart healthy walking routine. Pre and post walk stretches as well as step/pace guidelines will be offered by the instructor as well as route options so that the club can be adapted to walkers with different personal goals and physical needs. It is not expected that all participants will walk at the same pace, the same route or the same amount of time.   

We’ll start our walking route at the Community House with a weekly check in and stretch. Two additional walking club times will be suggested but will not be instructor guided. Instructor: Laura Downey

Core Stretch & Strength

IN-STUDIO. Based on theories and exercises from Pilates, Bartenieff Fundamentals, Hatha yoga and classical ballet, jazz and modern technique, this class will focus on strengthening the abdominal, hip, back, leg, arm and shoulder muscles and then transition into a deep full body stretch during the second half of class. The goals of the class are increased core strength and stability and full body integration for ease of movement, body comfort and the invigorating yet soothing effects of an embodied movement practice. You’ll love this class!   Instructor: Laura Downey

West African Drum Class

IN-STUDIO and OUTDOORS (weather-permitting). Students will learn to play two to three traditional rhythms from Guinea, West Africa. Instruction will focus on the djembe (West African hand drum), both in terms of handing techniques learning specific parts/ patterns and stick and bell patterns on the dununs (West African bass drums played with drumsticks). Class is geared toward beginning and intermediate levels. Please bring your own djembe or dunun to class, as the Park District does not supply drums. Instructor: Greg Lundberg
